Dental crowns are excellent in restoring damaged, decayed, or otherwise compromised teeth. When dental crowns are well cared for, they can last up to 15 years! While dental crowns are designed to last, this doesn’t mean they can’t loosen or fall out from your tooth prematurely. Dr. Mark Wright has seen it all at his Colorado Springs, Colorado office regarding dental restorations like crowns. We can fix your compromised crown, but here is what to do to protect your dental health when your crown falls out.
- Stay calm: It can be distressing to lose a crown but know it can be fixed. It may even be painful at first but understand that this damage is fixable. When you encounter a dental emergency, remaining calm prevents you from jeopardizing your health.
- Recover the crown: If you can locate the crown, rinse it with water and put it safely in a plastic bag or container. Bring your dental cap to the dentist to see whether it can be reused. If you have swallowed your crown, you should go to the ER. You may have breathed the crown into the lungs, resulting in asphyxiation—a life-threatening condition. If you swallow it, you have nothing to worry about. It will pass through your digestive tract in a few days.
- Call your dentist: Informing your dentist about your lost crown is a priority. The tooth underneath is at risk of infection or further damage without the protection of a crown. Since a lost crown is a dental emergency, we offer last-minute dental appointments to manage your pain and restore your dental health.
