Turn Back the Clock with Botox for TMJ Disorder

When patients suffer from pain caused by TMJ disorder (sometimes called TMD), they may not first think of Botox injections as a solution. Most individuals associate Botox with cosmetic procedures. However, relief is in sight for TMJ sufferers who live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dr. Mark Wright is here to help.

What Is TMJ Disorder (TMD)?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jawbone (the mandible) to the skull. This joint is located in front of your ears, and its function is to allow the jaw to close and open for tasks such as chewing, speaking, or yawning. When someone has TMJ disorder, they experience pain when doing basic things like trying to yawn or chew. In short, the joint has a difficult time doing its job.

TMJ disorder symptoms can include any of these:

  • Discomfort when chewing or biting
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Grating, clicking or popping sounds while moving the jaw
  • Tenderness in the jaw
  • Persistent earache
  • Limited range of motion in the jaw or locked jaw

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

Bruxism is the leading cause of TMD. Bruxism is the clenching and grinding that some people do when sleeping. Other causes of TMD include:

  • Trauma to the teeth and jaw
  • An improper bite
  • Arthritis in the jaw
  • Wear and tear on the jaw

Can Botox Treat TMJ Disorder Pain?

The FDA has approved Botox to treat TMD symptoms, and the injections have a proven track record of delivering long-lasting, effective, and safe relief to the pain caused by TMD or bruxism. Moreover, the injections are well-tolerated.
