What should I do when diagnosed with periodontal gum pockets by my dentist?

  • Dr. Mark H Wright

Periodontal Gum Pockets in Colorado Springs CO area

Periodontal disease is an infection that can become highly damaging to the smile, affecting the teeth, gums, and bones. It can create “gum pockets” that allow bacteria to collect between the gum tissues and the teeth to cause irreversible damage. It is completely preventable, but if it occurs, it requires the care of a dentist to alleviate it.

Dr. Mark H. Wright of Mark H Wright DDS in Colorado Springs, Colorado, encourages you to book a consultation visit with our team to get a definitive diagnosis of periodontal gum pockets and discuss your dental treatment plan after diagnosis.

What should I do if I am diagnosed with periodontal gum pockets?

In most cases, treatment with antibiotics and scaling and root planing are typically the first steps toward restoring periodontal gum health.

Here are some of the other recommended steps you can take if you are facing this condition:

  • Schedule regular dental check-ups. Visit Dr. Mark H. Wright at least twice yearly for routine check-ups and cleanings. This will help in detecting any signs of periodontal disease at an early stage
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once daily to remove plaque and bacteria from your mouth. This will help prevent the progression of periodontal disease
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash. Ask our dental team for recommendations on which mouthwash to use that can help control plaque buildup and reduce the chances of developing gum disease
  • Quit smoking. If you are a smoker, it is critical that you consider quitting, as smoking can worsen periodontal disease and hinder the effectiveness of treatment
  • Follow a healthy diet. A well-balanced and nutritional diet helps boost your immune system and fight against infection, including periodontal disease
  • Consider scaling and root planing. This is a deep cleaning procedure done regularly to remove plaque and tartar buildup under the gumline and smooth out rough areas on the tooth root to prevent bacteria from building up again
  • Follow recommended treatment plans. If Dr. Mark H. Wright recommends further treatment, such as gum surgery or antibiotics, make sure to follow through with it for optimal final results
